Eko-Terre launches a garment insulation made from vegetable and bio-sourced fibers

VEGETOTM milkweed insulation, now available

When milkweed insulation first appeared in 2016, demand was tremendous, but the supply chain was not up and running.

Since then, Eko-Terre has taken steps to bring this amazing milestone in the apparel industry back to the forefront. "I have been closely involved in milkweed projects from the beginning. I thought it was a shame to let go of what could become a flagship of the textile industry. Thanks to Eko-Terre, the opportunity to continue the adventure occurred," says Ghyslain Bouchard, General Manager of Eko-Terre's milkweed division.

Once considered a weed because it was ubiquitous in North America, milkweed was underestimated in its potential contribution to the national economy. Today, it is described as a raw material with a thousand virtues. It contributes to the blooming of pollinators and monarch butterflies. Vegetable silk from its fruit allows the manufacture of a wide range of products whose ecological value is in no way a compromise to performance. In nature, milkweed fibers are designed to carry the seeds to the wind, which gives it lightness properties. Its tubular structure gives it insulating properties that make it an excellent substitute for goose down. Building on these qualities, Eko-Terre has launched its program to transform the plant into clothing insulation.

Marketed under the brand name VEGETOTM, rolls of milkweed insulation are now available. This new generation of insulation has the advantage of being biodegradable and plastic-free. At all stages of its life cycle, from production to post-use, VEGETO is positioned as a model of sustainable development. Ecological considerations are an integral part of Eko-Terre's values, concerned with the well-being of all stakeholders in order to achieve equitable results.
